PEWAUKEE (WRN) - A group has scrapped a recall campaign against Pewaukee’s mayor, saying they’ll try to have him defeated when he goes up for re-election next spring. Scott Klein says he’s on the hot seat because he supported the elimination of the city’s police department. Starting next year, Pewaukee and its 11,000 residents will be protected by the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, at a saving of $800,000 in 2010. The group Pewaukee First took out petitions for a recall election, but did not file them by Monday’s deadline. The earliest an election could be held is next February, and the group said it would try to get Klein defeated in the regular contest next April. Alderman Roger Hathaway is running, and he opposed the elimination of the police department. In its paperwork for the recall petitions, the group said Klein failed to act impartially, and did not use proper channels in making policies. The group did not elaborate. Mayor Klein said he did nothing that warrants a recall. He said Pewaukee would have had to drastically cut services next year without the change in policing.
