DETROIT -- Detroit is dead last on a newly-compiled list of the best places in the country to start up a small business. Portfolio.com publishes the annual survey of 100 metro areas, encompassing about 200 million people and five-million small businesses. The research considers small business growth, employment, and population.
Economically downtrodden Detroit placed last, the same as in 2009. Grand Rapids, the only other Michigan city to make it on the list, fell from 80 in 2009 to 93 for 2010. Taking the top honor with this year's number one spot was Austin, Texas.
