UNDATED (WKZO) -- Former Congressman Pete Hoekstra is taking heat for his Super Bowl ad which has been called everything from inaccurate to misleading to racially insensitive.
Some say it is working. It portrays a young Asian girl claiming Debbie Stabenow is responsible for sending jobs to China.
Democrats responded with their own spot. It features an ad produced by Republican Mike Cox slamming Hoekstra in the Gubernatorial campaign.
Republican consultant Nick DeLeeuw scolded Hoekstra for the spot, calling it xenophopic and appalling. MSU marketing professor Robert Kolt says it wasn’t cute, funny or memorable, and not “Super Bowl worthy”.
But, the fact that it’s being talked about makes it successful. Hoekstra’s campaign plans to run it on selected cable channels for the next 2 weeks.
The Hoekstra ad wasn’t the only one that raised hackles.
Ford demanded General Motors pull an ad that may wind up being a fan favorite. It shows several pick-ups navigating a world devastated by the 2012 apocalypse, all meeting in a devastated urban landscape.
GM cited R.L. Polk data that shows that Silverado’s remain on the road longer than other pick-ups.
