'Man of Steel' Logo Revealed: Superman Swaps Pop for Heavy Metal — PIC

By Matt Patches, Hollywood.com Staff

When Christopher Nolan, the director who single-handedly revived and rebooted the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, took a producing role on the upcoming Superman revival Man of Steel, there was no question his take would swerve away from the ""Big Blue Boy Scout"" persona perfected in the Richard Donner '80s films and again with Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. Hiring the stylish, occasionally fetishistic Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) to take over made sense — unlike Batman, a regular joe character who could be completely grounded in reality, Superman was a flying, super strong alien being posing as a newspaper reporter. A little weirder, a little crazier, a perfect match for the duo's sensibilities.

Man of Steel was originally slated for December 2012, but found itself pushed to 2013 to give the filmmakers more time to get it right. Which explains why we saw our first official glimpse of the Son of Krypton, Henry Cavill, way back in August 2011 and nothing since. Now, we're getting another taste of the film, in the form of a title treatment. EW premiered the new and improved Superman shield, the iconic ""S"" cast into a sheet of metal (not too unlike last year's wild Girl with the Dragon Tattoo posters). The logo does the job: its a darker spin on a familiar character, it plays up the Dark Knight-esque non-character driven title and it just looks sweet.

The one concern: does it feel too much like a sequel to the 1997 Shaq-starring Steel? No, because nothing will ever be that awesome.

Man of Steel soars into theaters June 6, 2013.
