Spinetti discovered he had the disease after receiving hospital treatment for a spinal fracture last year (11). He passed away in a hospice in Monmouth, Wales on Tuesday (19Jun12) morning.
The stage and screen star, born in Welsh town Ebbw Vale in 1929, was a regular in London's West End theatres and also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Spinetti had appeared in more than 30 films including three The Beatles movies, Franco Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew, and The Return of the Pink Panther.
The actor was handed a Tony Award for his 1963 interpretation of the drill sergeant major in Oh! What a Lovely War and he co-authored In His Own Write, a play based on the book by John Lennon, which he also directed at the National Theatre in London.
