ZEELAND (WHTC) - Seven employees of the Mead Johnson Nutritionals plant on Main Street in Zeeland were hospitalized for minor respiratory irritation after a leak on Tuesday afternoon. It took about 90 minutes for hazmat teams to shut off a valve following the small leak in a five and a half-foot cylinder containing about 150 pounds of chlorine that was in a 12-by-12 foot room. Portions of East Main Avenue and Fairview Road were closed to traffic while Zeeland firefighters and rescue crews responded. Five of the unnamed workers were treated at Spectrum-Zeeland Community Hospital; the other two went to Holland Hospital. No immediate word as to the cause of the leak as the incident remains under investigation.
